Why Did Didion Write?
George Orwell was born in Motihari, India in 1903
At an early age, Orwell would make up stories because he was lonely and believed nobody cared about him
He would grow up to be very strongly opinionated, addressing subjects such as imperialism and communism
Orwell died of Tuberculosis in January of 1950
Orwell's tone in his "Why I Write" was
somber
and
regretful
"I had the
lonely
child's habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons" (Orwell 2)
"And looking back through my work, I see that it is invariably where I
lacked
a political purpose that I wrote
lifeless
books and was
betrayed
into purple passages without meaning, decorative adjectives and humbug generally" (7)
It is pretty simple why Didion writes.

Had he not warned me when I forgot my own notebook that the ability to make a note when something came to mind was the difference between being able to write and not being able to write? Was something telling him that night that the time for being able to write was running out?
